News from England

 Elena Aistleitner, 3. HAK

I am already here in England for more than 4 months now and I am going home in a month. I can´t believe it. The time is running so fast. I am living in Barrow, in the north west of England. Special in that area are the lakes, therefore the name “Lake District”. I visited the longest lake of England called “Lake Windermere”, which is over 18 km long.

“Would you like a cup of tea?” The first thing my host family asked me when I arrived in England. I have learned a lot about the English culture so far, made some excursions, met people from all over the world and of course I learned to speak English properly.

The college was a whole new experience for me. There was a huge difference between the college and my actual school. Ranging from the college canteen to various subject choices. The tutors were all nice and helpful and it felt like I know them for years.

At the beginning I had problems to understand the people, as they have a strong accent here. But after some time I totally settled in. The people are really hospitable, so I made some good friends in that short time.

My family made that semester in England possible for me to see everything here and learn as much as I can for my life. Of course I really appreciate that! After all the great time here I am so glad that I made the decision a year ago going abroad and spending half a year in England. I recommend everyone spending a year or half year abroad. Of course I had to face a lot of ups and downs, but I learned to cope with the situations. I got to know the fantastic culture of England, made friends for life, became independent and handled challenges. I learned to deal with nervousness, adrenaline and homesickness. That half year changed me a lot, but only in a positive sense.

A big thank you to the principal and the professors and of course to my classmates of 3AK who supported me throughout my time in England.

Exchange is something you will never forget, something that will always be a part of you. It is something no one back at home will ever truly understand.
